Death is inevitable and it is a guest that visits without notice or any prior knowledge.

A Professor of Sports Psychology, Professor Ademola Onifade, of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, on Tuesday, died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

He was former Dean, Faculty of Education and the immediate past Director of Centre for Environment and Science Education (CESE)

Onifade, who handed over few days ago as CESE director, was to proceed on sabbatical leave to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and was expected to resume on October 1.

Onifade, who had been receiving treatment at LASUTH, after he slumped at his FESTAC residence on September 12,. He was in his late 50s died (3 days after he slumped) on monday 15 night - at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

His sudden death had thrown the university community into mourning and many of his colleagues were shocked when the news hit the campus yesterday morning.

The Late LASU Don, who was seen in the campus last Friday, was full of life and shared in some discussions about the state of affairs of the university, while looking forward to resume at UNILAG for his sabbatical.

Reacting to his death, Chairman of ASUU-LASU, Dr. Adekunle Idris, said his members were shock over the demise of Onifade, saying: Idris said: ``The late Prof. Onifade slumped at his Festac residence on Friday night and had since been admitted at LASUTH until he died on Monday night.”

He said that the union was still in a state of shock as the late professor was hale and hearty, and did not show any sign of sickness before the sad incident.

``We were on the field together for sports about 10 days ago, as he jogs and exercises himself regularly.

“He was also seen in the campus last Friday and was full of life.

“LASU branch of ASUU had lost a rare gem and will miss late Prof. Onifade as he was a true comrade and a great scholar of repute.

“He was a past secretary of ASUU at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and an elder at the ASUU-LASU chapter.

“Late Onifade is a man of truth and selfless ASUU fighter.

“He advises ASUU-LASU on the road to trail and always hit the nail on the head, even when others do not,” Idris said.

“This is very unfortunate. He was one of our main pillars in union activities on campus. We gained a lot from him. When I saw him last week Thursday, he was healthy and okay. We talked about several issues including union matters.’’

At the Faculty of Education and the Department of Physical Health and Education, academic and non-academic staffers were in a state of shock with many wondering what happened.

When contacted, the university’s Press and Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kayode Sutton, said he was not available to comment on his death also the Vice Chancellor, Prof John Obafunwa, was not available when media visited his office.

From the information gathered by FBM through his profile and some people who pleaded anonymity, the late Don was the only representative of Nigeria at UNESCO Committee on Sports and Physical Education, former ASUU Secretary at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), member of Nigeria University Games (NUGA), former chairman, LASU Sports Council, consultant to the National Sports Commission (NSC) and at various times the Head of Department of Physical and Education in Faculty of Education of LASU.
