Indications from the senate plenary session yesterday reveal that federal lawmakers and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) might be heading on a collision course.

The senate had on Thursday summoned the Customs top brass to appear before it to explain the recent lifting of ban, on the importation of rice into the country.

The motion which was moved on the floor of the house was sponsored by Senator Adamu Aliero representing Kebbi Central and 28 other senators.

The senators expressed concern over the reintroduction of import duty payment at land borders despite the Central Bank of Nigeria ban.

In June, the CBN had barred 41 items including rice from accessing forex due to the drain of the already dwindling foreign reserves stock which has endangered the nation’s economy.

During the debate, senators decried what they termed the Comptroller General’s unilateral decision to reopen the country’s land borders to rice importation without due consultation with relevant authorities.

The action they collectively argued, might invalidate the gains so far recorded in rice production in the country.

The Custom boss on October 8 was reported to have dared CBN decision by removing its earlier decision on rice.

Col. Ali giving reasons for his decision, said rice imports through land borders would attract the prevailing import duty of 10 percent, with 60 percent levy.
