Why Everybody May Not Get Prepaid Electricity Meter - Distribution Company

The Managements of the 11 private electricity distribution companies (Discos) have said they have nearly concluded studies on meters’ distribution formular and are set to roll out the meters before the end of next month.

Managing Director of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), Mr. Abiodun Ajifowobaje, who spoke for the Discos shortly after the April meeting with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently, said “the Discos have been doing a study for long on the type of meters that are suitable for a particular area and the distribution system, and then come out with a robust metering plan.

“Most of us have concluded this and probably before the end of May, most of us will start rolling out these meters in large numbers and when they are completed, estimated billing will not be an issue again,” he said.

While emphasising on their efforts to curb estimated billing, the Discos said their studies have shown that over 30 percent customers bypass the prepaid meters which means they would consider using other meters in such areas. Ajifowobaje said: “I am warning our consumers who are clamouring for prepaid meters that our studies show that not everybody will get prepaid meters. Where we have them today, over 30 percent have been bypassed by customers. So we are going to use smart meters for such places.”

Vice chairman of Shiroro Power, Mr. Peters Olubunmi, who represented the Generation companies (Gencos) addressed complaints about poor power supply saying, “gas-fired Gencos are struggling hard with gas delivery to their plants. For the hydro plants, this is a season that the water is low and generation is low compared to what obtained in August, September and October.”

He sought for patience from the electricity consumers as the situation gradually improves. “While the customers will be pressing, they need to temper some of these things with understanding, that there is need for a little more time and I can assure you that we will all be the better for it,” he said.
