on
Taraba state returning officer for governorship election Prof. Muhamdu Kyari has declare the governorship election in Taraba as inconclusive.
The returning officer made the declaration in Jalingo Taraba state capital after collating the result from sixteen out of the seventeen local government areas in Taraba state.
He said the reason for the declaration was because the number of canceled votes was above the gap between APC who came second in the election to PDP who came first.
Election in Donga local government area of the state was canceled by the returning officer and some other few polling units across the state. The total number scored by PDP in Donga was 37,069 while APC came second with 10,087
Elections were also canceled in Six poling units of Takum, five in Karim, in Yoro and Ussah local governments areas.
There was a report which indicates violence in some part of the state according to vanguard.
It was also gathered that the House Secretary to Taraba state government in Gyembu Sadauna Local Government was bunt down. The country home Abel Diah the member representing Mbamga state constituency was also razed down by some angry youths who attempted to snatch the election materials from the collation center of the area.
Also two people were killed in Rankaviri the headquarters of Ardo-Kola local government area.
Nigerians had expected that the election would yield the first female governor in Nigeria’s history.
But as results of the election from the local government areas trickled into the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, Ms. Al-Hasan, fondly known as Mama Taraba by supporters, at some points overtook her main challenger, Mr. Ishaku.
This triggered nationwide celebration by people who thought Ms. Al-Hasan was on her way to becoming the first female governor.
But after all votes in the election were collated, Ms. Al-Hasan trailed the PDP candidate by over 50,000 votes, but the electoral body declared the election inconclusive.
The Taraba governorship election is the second to be declared inconclusive.
On Sunday, INEC declared a similar election in Imo inconclusive, saying the number of cancelled votes (144,715) in relation to the margin of win (79,529) by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Rochas Okorocha, called for a supplementary election.
Mr. Okorocha was initially thought to have won the election after he garnered 385,671 votes compared to the 306,142 votes scored by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Emeka Ihedioha.
The APC candidate is ahead of Mr. Ihedioha by 79,529 votes, which is by far lower than the 144,715 votes cancelled by INEC as a result of irregularities in some wards.
INEC’s verdict on the Imo election is a repeat of what happened in the April 26, 2011 governorship election in the state.
The commission had at the time declared the poll inconclusive because election did not hold in Ohaji/Egbema, Mbatioli, Ngor-Okpala and Oguta Local Government Areas as well as in Orji Ward in Owerri North Local Government Area.
Before that election was declared inconclusive, results for 24 of the state’s 27 local government areas had been announced, with Mr. Okorocha leading in 12 local government areas with a slim total margin while the then governor, Ikedi Ohakim, also led in 12 local government areas but trailed Mr. Okorocha in the total votes garnered.
A supplementary election was then fixed for May 6, 2011, which Mr. Okorocha, who ran then on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, went on to win according premium times.
