Uniformed militants attacked a school, killing 84 people and taking hostages on Tuesday, according to an official.Ambulances were transporting wounded children from the Army Public School in Peshawar to hospital. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the assault.


"We were standing outside the school and firing suddenly started and there was chaos everywhere and the screams of children and teachers," said Jamshed Khan, a school bus driver.

Army commandos were sent to the scene and exchanged fire with at least six gunmen who entered the school.

There were 84 dead, and around the same number injured, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak told reporters. Earlier, officials said 26 children had been killed.

About 500 students and teachers were believed to be inside
