Revealed! Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III and His Mistakes
on
For more than four decades now, Oyo had been specifically lucky to have a dynamic and purposeful monarch in the person of Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III. Within that period in history, Kabiyesi had successfully put Oyo in its right place in the royal hierarchy of Yoruba land.
The list of achievements and glory of Oyo under him need not be mentioned now. However, all the achievements notwithstanding, Kabiyesi remains mortal which does not exempt him from the usual mortal errors and mistakes. One of these is the fact that in the last two decades, especially since the present political dispensation had virtually turned himself to an executive Oba in all spheres of public life in Oyo covering all areas of public interest, politics, religion and commerce.
One cannot really blame Kabiyesi for putting the interest of his children above any other party. That is normal. But a situation in which he will treat any other Oyo indigene in public office with suspicion to the extent of pulling them down is unfortunate.
Ogo Atiba had been at the helm of affairs in Ofa Meta as the Chairman of Atiba Local Government for almost ten years now with little break. Yet, he wants to move higher at the expense of a well performing incumbent in the national Assembly. In addition to that, another of the royal dynasty is currently the Secretary of another local government within Oyo. That is apart from other members of the royal family who are scattered across all boards of parastatals at both at both State and federal levels including the State Executive Council.
As far as the protection of the children’s interest is concerned, it doesn’t matter whether there is one leg in the APC and the other is in the PDP. No wonder, the tickets of the two political parties are offered for National Assembly slot if only to ensure the support of the executive royal father.
But mention any other Oyo indigene in public office. They are looked upon with royal suspicion as targets for pull-down syndrome; only to be replaced with somebody with the blue blood. No other person can occupy an office for more than one term before he is pulled down.
Holders of non-political offices are not spared either. Perhaps, the erudite Chief Imam of Oyo will one-day explain what led to the Kabiyesi abandoning the central mosque under him for his jumat and sallah prayer. It may however have to do with his refusal to compromise the dignity and sanctity of exhaled spiritual title of Imam. Whether you are Chief Imam, Archbishop or General Overseer, you have to submit yourself to the whims of the Palace, otherwise you are in trouble.
