The Kano State Government has banned the buying and selling of ‘bush meat’ to avoid the spread of Ebola disease to the ancient city.

The state government had formed a technical committee to review the possibility of completely banning the selling and buying of bush meat, a general term used for animals usually killed in the bush/forest for human consumption.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso explained during the weekly meeting of the state executive council on Wednesday that the state might put punitive measures against anybody found violating the directive.

Even before the announcement of the ban, most residents had stopped eating bush meat with sellers complaining of lack of business.
Mr. Kwankwaso also said that he had held series of meetings with the authorities of Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital so that it can be used as a possible clinical ward for Ebola treatment should there be
an outbreak.

There has been no reported case of Ebola in Kano. The three people that have died of the disease in Nigeria died in Lagos.
