Government Confirm Two Fresh Cases In Lagos As Officials Reveal Family Of Late Nurse Who Contracted The Virus Are On The Run

The Federal Goverment has on Friday said that two new cases of Ebola infection have been confirmed in Lagos.

This brings to 9 people confirmed positive, including late Patrick Sawyer and his nurse.

139 people are now under surveillance for Ebola in Nigeria.

The number has jumped up from 70, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu has said.

"Fatality rate of Ebola in Nigeria is estimated at about 30%, compared with 55% across West Africa.
The 55% fatality rate means “half people infected survive Ebola. It is not a death sentence,” Chukwu added.

In an article published on a Liberian newspaper, The New Dawn, it has been reported that CCTV footage from the James Spriggs Payne airport in the capital of Monrovia showed that Patrick Sawyer was visibly ill before his flight.

The footage reportedly showed Sawyer avoiding bodily contact with other travellers and airport officials. “His face bore a sad countenance like someone who was troubled,” the article wrote.

It added that the video showed Sawyer “lying flat on his stomach on the floor in the corridor of the airport, a sign of someone in excruciating pain.”

People, reacting to the report, expressed anger that the Liberian did not take adequate measures in consideration of others’ health, especially as his sister had succumbed to the disease.

Similarly, Nigerian health officials  have revealed that the husband and children of the Nigerian  nurse who died after getting infected with the Ebola virus are on the run.

The nurse, the only Nigerian fatality from the disease which has killed over 900 people in four West African countries, was exposed to the virus at a health facility Sawyer was taken before his death.
