The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has urged victims of piracy to make reports available to the agency.

Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, Director of Shipping Development, NIMASA, Captain Warredi Enisuor, bemoaned the situation where piracy attacks within Nigeria’s waters remain unreported.

According to him,
“when people talk about so many piracy attacks happening within Nigeria’s waterways and not being reported, then it means they are not helping us to do our jobs.
“When this thing happens, people should report them so that we can go out and do our job. That is why we are here. We are not here to debunk people’s claim. If there are piracy attacks, victims should come out and tell us.
“We do as much as possible to see everything, and also encourage the public to help us with what they see. This is so because those attacks that we cannot see where we are, they can help us to make sure we investigate.”

On the half year report of piracy attacks released recently by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) which stated that 11 piracy attacks occurred within Nigeria’s territorial waters so far in 2015, Warredi insisted that NIMASA does not rely on such reports.

“Those figures released by the IMB are not our actual figures. If you want to get the real figures, then you have to visit the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) website, not the IMB.
“IMO gets better and true figures because every flagged vessel has a responsibility to report piracy incidence that happens onboard their vessels to their flag and coastal States. Sometimes, a lot of them find it more comfortable to report to their flag States which is their own country
“Anytime they report such incidences to their flag States, the flag States will present the issue to the IMO, who in turn discusses it with our representatives at the IMO, then our representative at the IMO will inform us. That is why we prefer to check and rate ourselves with what the IMO presents on their website.
